Back to School Letter

September 2014
Dear Parents,
Welcome to third grade! I am looking forward to working with your child this year. This letter contains many of the informational things necessary for third grade. If you have any questions, I will try to answer them at Open House on Thursday, September 18 (6-7:30) or drop me a note or email and I will get back to you.

Our day begins with prayers led by Mrs. Bergeron at 7:40. Our subjects are Religion, reading, spelling, math, writing, science and social studies. Starting Monday, September 8th, we have the following specials:
Monday: Computer
Tuesday: Spanish and Art
Wednesday: PE (children need to wear their gym uniforms to school)
Thursday: Music
Friday: Library

We will be having Mass on the first Tuesday of the month in the gym. This will start on September 16. The children need to wear their formal uniform for Mass and on every Tuesday.
Boys: white oxford shirt, navy tie and khaki pants
Girls: white round collar blouse and plaid jumper
Please label all clothing items. Everyone in the school has the required sweater and there are hundreds of gym jackets.

Communication
One of the folders you sent in will be used as a TAKE-HOME folder. Homework, papers and notices will be in this folder. Please make sure your child empties this folder and returns homework and/or school notices (lunch money, notes, etc.) Please send notes and money to school in envelopes clearly marked with your child’s name, what the money is for and our classroom name – 3T. PLACE THESE IN THEIR TAKE-HOME FOLDER.

Lunches / Snacks / Milk
Children should bring a healthy morning snack with a drink and a lunch. Hot Lunch orders are sent home in the Wednesday folder and are on line. Please be sure to send lunch orders back by the due dates on the slips. They will no longer be accepted after the due date.

Snack Room
The children may purchase snacks for 45¢. There are various types of chips and icees. They place their orders in the morning and snack is distributed at lunchtime.

Homework
One of the composition books you purchased is your child’s vocabulary/spelling notebook. It will go home Monday night (starting 9/15) with the pretest that they took that day. It will need to be returned each day. They will be asked to write these words 3 times every Monday and this list can be used to study from. Every Friday, your child will have a spelling test. Each night your child will write in their planner the homework they have for the night. This will vary between math, reading, phonics, English, science or Social Studies. I will write the homework online, but please check their planners in case of changes. Everything must be done in cursive. Please make sure your child reads at least 15 minutes a day and is practicing their addition and subtraction facts.

Tests
Tests will be given at the end of each chapter. I will try to keep tests for Friday, but with schedules tests maybe moved to the following week. Spelling will ALWAYS be on Friday.

BIRTHDAYS are special.
Feel free to send in a special treat for the class on your child’s birthday. We presently have 17 students in our class. Cakes may be ordered through the school. We will celebrate summer birthdays in May and June. Please let me know if your child has any food allergies. Our school policy states that we are not allowed to let the children distribute birthday invitations at school unless all the children (or all the same gender) in our class are invited.

Scholastic Reading Club Orders
Each month I will send home the Scholastic Reading Club flier. This is optional. Orders are placed and the books will be delivered to the classroom. If you decide to buy books and are paying by check please make your checks payable to Scholastic Reading Club. Your order may also be placed on-line. To place an on-line order you can click the link on our class website. Our classroom code for scholastic is JZZ2X.

Dismissal
Dismissal is orderly and quick if everyone remains in their cars and follows the “route” for their grade level. It is most helpful to us if you put your child’s First and Last name on a cardboard sign and display it in the front passenger windshield. This will help identify the child and car as you move along the line.
